TACLOBAN CITY – An extension to tax condonation program of the city government was approved by members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod in response to the pronouncement of the Office of the City Treasurer that as of Dec. 31 their office was only able to collect more than P4 million from real property tax.
Said amount was minimal and far from the estimated amount estimated by the Commission on Audit of more than P60 million account receivable of the city from delinquent taxpayers, according to Councilor Jerry Uy.
Hence, he motioned to pass a resolution that will extend the tax condonation program of the city government until Jan. 31 of this year.
“This will allow taxpayers to pay their dues to the city government and for the city government to collect more taxes, especially from those who have yet to pay their real property tax,” Uy said.
Uy added that it is necessary to extend the condonation as the city government needs additional income.
Uy said that the City Treasurer’s Office should furnished them a copy of the list of delinquent taxpayers in the city, so that they can help them convince those individuals to pay their dues.
Providing list of names of delinquent taxpayers to the city council is provided under the Local Government Code that mandates said office to provide the council the list of names every end of the year.
“So far they have not provided us with the names since we approved the resolution last year,” Uy said.
Uy also explained that in the payment of real property taxes while under the tax condonation program, surcharges and penalties are not included but only the basic tax are to be paid.
