Camp Ruperto K Kangleon, Palo, Leyte - Chief Superintendent Arnold Rayala Revilla, PRO8 Regional Director discloses that the PNP supports the pronouncement of the President for the total log ban nationwide. As deputized unit in the campaign against illegal logging, the organization gives premium on such endeavor.
To recall, the President Aquino yesterday declares an indefinite log ban all over the country. Aquino issues Executive Order 23 implementing the indefinite log ban and creating an Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force to be headed by Environment and natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje.
According to him that at about 4:30 PM of March 8, 2011, Sta Rita MPS received information from a concerned citizen regarding illegally cut logs (mangroves) located at the shoreline of Brgy Cabunga-an, Sta Rita, Samar.
Elements of Sta Rita Municipal Police Station led by PInsp Eric Leuterio, COP, immediately coordinated with Mr Edgar Obrar and Mr Abraham EbaƱez, personnel of DENR Sta Rita Field Office for joint operations. Said joint teams proceeded to the abovementioned place to verify the veracity of the information. Upon arrival thereat, the group found an abandoned 328 pieces cut logs (Makawan Mangroves) with the total volume of 2,548. 24 board feet and with an estimated market value of One Hundred One Thousand and Nine Hundred Twenty Nine Pesos (Php 101, 929.00).
The owner of the illegally cut logs were identified as Bienvinido Elorcha and Elesias Eraya, both resident of Brgy Cabunga-an, Sta Rita, Samar. Illegally sawn logs were confiscated and thru the help of Brgy Tanods were brought to Sta Rita MPS for documentation and subsequently turned-over to DENR personnel for proper disposition.
Report on Shooting Incident.
Another Incident: At about 9:20 AM of march 11, 2011 in Brgy Katipunan, Sta Fe, Leyte, one Joey Francisco, 37 years old, married, Filipino, motorcycle driver and a resident of the abovementioned place was shot and wounded by still an unidentified suspect.
Initial investigation disclosed that the victim was sitting in front of their main door taking his breakfast when a single motorcycle with two (2) riders wearing black helmets arrived/stopped in front their house. The back rider alighted from the motorcycle and hastily approached the victim and without a word, drew a short firearm with unknown caliber from his waistline and fired three (3) successive shots directly to the victim.
Victim was hit, his left hand and both legs were wounded. Victim’s wife identified as Angelita Francisco arrived prompting the gunman to fled away on board their gate away vehicle. Motive of the incidents is yet to be determined by Sta Fe Police Station.
Victim was immediately brought to hospital for immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, Sta Fe Police Station received information from a concerned citizen whose identify was withheld that the motive was due to unequal sharing “unsehan” of the proceeds from their illegal activities. Case is now under investigation.
