DPWH RO8 implements projects in support to tourism development

BARAS, Palo, Leyte - - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office VIII implements projects in support to tourism development. The DPWH and Department of Tourism (DOT) have embarked on a convergence program where they work together in prioritizing tourism road infrastructures. The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between these two agencies have been signed in January 2012.

“Wherever there are tourist destination, our agency make sure that access roads going there will be in place. And if these roads are in place, it will be improved and widened,” OIC Director Edgar B. Tabacon disclosed.

The road tourism projects will include local roads under the jurisdiction of the local governments. These roads will remain as local roads and the DPWH only asked to be granted the road right of way. Many of these local roads, which serve as entry and exit points of tourist destinations are already being paved and upgraded to national road standards.

Under the DPWH-DOT Convergence Program, 17 tourism road projects will be implemented under the 2017 GAA amounting to Php 1,034,439 Billion.

Among these projects of are Php 160-M Junction Abuyog-Silago Road, Cadac-an-Malaguicay-Boundary Silago Road Section (Malaguicay Falls), including bridge, Abuyog, Leyte; Php 120 M Capul Circumferential Road, Aguin-Landusan-Sawang-Sagaosawan-Jubang-Oson-Poblacion Section, Capul, Northern Samar; Php 100-M Access Road from Brgy. Polangi - Brgy. Panayuran - Brgy. Literon leading to Lulugayan Falls, Calbiga River and Langun-Gobingob Caves, Calbiga, Samar; Php 100-M Borongan-Llorente Closed Canopy Forest Area (including Construction of Bridge, Slope Protection and drainage), Bgry. Lapgap-Brgy. Maytigbao, Maydolong, Eastern Samar; Php 100-M Borongan-Llorente Closed Canopy Forest Area, Brgy. Del Pilar (Maydolong, Eastern Samar) to Boundary Basey (Samar) and Php 100-M Access road leading to Bangon Falls (Slope Protection), Brgy. Tinaplacan, Calbayog City, Samar.

Other projects also include: Php 90-M Borongan-Llorente Closed Canopy Forest Area (including Slope Protection and drainage) along Bgry. Tagaslian-Brgy. Del Pilar, Maydolong, Eastern Samar; Php 77.5 M Ma. Clara-Cagnituan Road leading to Maasin City Tourism Loop (Monte Cueva, Danao Camp Tree Park, St. Francis Javier Shrine, Maasin City Zoo Theme Park), Maasin City, Southern Leyte; Php 54,939-M Access Road leading to Naval Port, including ROW, Naval, Biliran; Php 50-M Access Road leading to Paninirungan Port, Pambujan, Northern Samar;  Php 20-M Access Road to Hilongos Port, Hilongos, Leyte;  Php 12-M Access Road leading to San Isidro Seaport, San Isidro, Leyte; and

Five access road projects worth Php 10-M each include: Minasangay Ecological Park (including Slope Protection and 1-Box Culvert, Balangkayan, Eastern Samar; Baras-Candahug-Manlurip-DZR Airport Road, Baras, Palo, Leyte; Access Road leading to Calubian Seaport, Calubian, Leyte; Access Road to Bato Port, Bato, Leyte and Junction National Road to Lintaon Road leading to Lintaon Peak,  Baybay City, Leyte

DPWH-DOT Convergence Program seeks to boost tourism infrastructure projects in priority tourist destination areas in the Philippines.
